Review of Dru-P & Clay’s “For the Fam
By Dave Rockstar

If albums were made classic by production alone, Dru-P & Clay’s “For the Fam” would be a legend.

Unfortunately, this is not the case. “For the Fam” is a melodic and exciting audio journey through the thoughts and musings of a pair of typical Alaskan guys as they traipse through the harsh land that they call home – but it leaves something to be desired, and that something is the polished sound of industry and/or underground veterans.

I mean, I’ll be honest – flow isn’t EVERYTHING (although it’s been a big deal to me for the last couple reviews). You have your artists who have obscure, if not annoying voices and odd-ball cadences. Some are genius – like Aesop Rock and Pharcyde – others – like MF Doom – not so much. But the strain that holds these artists together is their adventure away from the norm, which isn’t really something that it feels like Dru-P and Clay have attempted here.

In the department of conceptual tracks (see “this moment,” “lock that door”) the album lacks creativity (though “American Holocaust” is informative and richly neo-political), and in the “drop-it-like-it’s-hot” department, the album lacks the grasp of technique (see: Juelz Santana) required to shoulder such AMAZING PRODUCTION.

The standout tracks of the album are “Bitch Girl” and “Expect the Unexpected.” On Unexpected we once again see how an artist with better technical capacity can improve those around him, a la Michael Jordan. Lil’ Mike does a great Job of making Clay and Dru-P sound and feel more comfortable. As far as Bitch, the beat is just too incredible to not mention.

Saddling up for the task of production on most of this album is Dru-P – who certainly has a career in the music industry ahead of him. The crispness of the samples as well as the second-to-none drum kits really make you wish he was producing for you too. Regardless of how good your current producer is; this makes Dru-P EASILY the most under-rated producer here, because if you’re not checking for him, you’re really missing something special.

This album is I’m sure, a shining gem on the Alaskan hiphop scene. The production alone is enough to get others ignored, and the skills of the two emcees featured certainly show capacity (and through talks with Dru, willingness) for improvement. The passion of Dru & Clay is evident throughout, as they just love making music, and if their passion conveys to practice, and honing of their craft, the duo won’t have any problems.
